Types of Architectural Concrete

Today, architectural concrete is used to bring to life some of the most expressive and unconventional design ideas. It is a high-strength, plastic material that resembles natural stone and enables the creation of complex shapes. Architectural concrete is applied in sculptural elements, façades, small architectural forms, landscape objects and many other design scenarios.

What types of architectural concrete exist?

Thanks to its versatility, architectural concrete is not a single uniform grey material — it includes several distinct categories, each with its own purpose and production method.

• Geometric concrete
Used to create monolithic structural elements. During production, the mix is poured into formwork, following a process similar to traditional concrete casting for slabs or foundations. This type is chosen for clean, precise geometric volumes and large architectural forms.

• Decorative concrete
Designed for finishing the surfaces of already constructed buildings — both interior and exterior walls. Builders use a wide range of modular and reusable molds: the mix is poured, cured, and then applied to façades and interiors to create textures, reliefs and decorative panels.

• Sculptural concrete
Used for producing artistic three-dimensional forms, statues and expressive spatial compositions. When modeling by hand, the process is different: a supporting frame is created first, then covered with mesh and a base layer of the concrete mix. Once it sets, the sculptor shapes the surface manually or with tools, achieving high precision in detailing.

In addition, there are specialized sub-types:

• White decorative architectural concrete
Used for façade decoration and design finishes. It provides a refined aesthetic but is not intended for heavy structural loads.

• White lightweight architectural concrete
Applied when creating volumetric decorative elements that imitate natural stone, wood or other organic materials, while remaining relatively light in weight.
